Frequently Asked Questions
How is a doula different than a midwife or doctor?
Midwives and Doctors are the medical professionals involved in your pregnancy, labour, and birth. They have an obligation to put the medical decisions ahead of the emotional ones. They take care of the things that need to happen to have the best chance of a positive birth outcome.
Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide consistent care and support that is personalized to your pregnancy, labour, and birth, giving you the best chance of a positive birth experience.
How is a doula's support different than my partner's?
Your partner or support person is there to comfort you, and provide you support that may seem similar to a doula's. They also are able to comfort you in ways a doula can't because they know you on a much deeper level. They are an important part of your team.
Doulas compliment the partner's role by bringing knowledge, understanding, and unbiased support to an emotionally charged experience that can be hard for partners to navigate when they see the people they love in labour.
What does science say about having a doula?
A 2017 Cochrane Review reports that the benefit of having a doula includes:
-
25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean
-
8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
-
10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
-
Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average
-
38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score
-
31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
Is there anything you don't do as a Doula?
I do not take part in any of the following.:
-
Free births - A medical professional must be involved in all births that I attend.
-
Make decisions on your behalf - I will help you to be informed enough so you can advocate for yourself and will be witness to your care.
-
Clinical tasks - including vaginal exams, wound care, blood pressure, fetal heart monitoring, or any other medical management.
-
Provide medical advice or diagnose conditions - referral to a care provider will be encouraged when necessary.
